A Tale of Two Managers

Case Solution

Matthew Andrews
Harvard Kennedy School ()

This brief case study is intended to be a vehicle that instructors can use to present cases to a management or leadership class and start a discussion about what organizational effectiveness looks like. The case analyzes the experiences of two different managers of the best English football teams. Students should use the information provided to advise the boards of those teams on whether to fire the two managers. The information in the first part of the case provides information on team performance (profit and loss), manager popularity, and other factors that influence prospects for effectiveness. The second part of the case shows the decisions about who was actually fired, which may come as a surprise to some. The two parts together allow for an interesting discussion about what organizational effectiveness is really all about. Case number HKS 193.0
