In the fall of 2017, HTC CEO and President Cher Wang lobbied the company to focus on virtual reality (VR). HTC’s first virtual reality product, VIVE, launched in spring 2016, was recognized for its superior immersive spatial scaling capabilities. However, early adoption of VR outside of gamers and general technology enthusiasts started due to high cost, poor quality of content, and some inconvenience for users in using the technology. Wang aims to become the leader in virtual reality despite growing competition from Sony, Facebook and other technology leaders, and several, such as HTC, are already seeking second-generation wireless virtual reality technology. As Wang seeks to develop the ecosystem through partnerships with developers, create a content platform, invest in virtual reality startups and launch virtual reality arcades, he must strike the right balance between promoting innovation in hardware, software and services, or both.
