The case describes competition in the US smartphone market and the position of one player, Research in Motion (RIM), which makes the popular Blackberry product line. In early 2011, RIM was in trouble. Its share price has plummeted amid poor business results and its future as an independent company is in doubt. A new CEO, Thorsten Heins, has to decide how the company will position itself for the future. The case allows students to understand the strategic dynamics in platform-based industries in general, and to take a closer look at how a company that led the industry in 2007 so dramatically fell to the ground four years later. The case is based on data and information from public sources.
