The Director of Logistics for Walmart Canada developed plans for a new distribution center in Alberta. Management had challenged them: Why not build the most sustainable distribution center in the world? However, it was not very clear how this challenge would translate into concrete actions, taking into account corporate sustainability goals. His team now examined three options that should be significantly more environmentally friendly: hydrogen fuel cells for forklifts, LED lighting, and renewable energy generation from on-site wind turbines. Any investment in these sustainable technologies had to make economic sense and any decision could drastically affect the operational performance of the distribution center.
