In this case, two vignettes are used to illustrate the ethical problems that can arise in hospitals. In the first, 89-year-old widow Theresa Addison is challenged to find a facility that provides long-term care for her 47-year-old son. Her son had been born with cerebral palsy and institutions considered her situation desperate. In the second vignette, an important indicator was missed by hospital staff during the newborn’s first well-being check, leading to significant brain necrosis.
