Dr. K. Anji Reddy founded Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd (DRL). Since then, the company has grown into one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in India. The company became more professional at an early stage and, over the years, family members defined and refined their roles for efficient management of the company. Dr. Reddy died on March 15, 2013. His son-in-law, G. V. Prasad, had already been in DRL for over 25 years at this time. Prasad recognized that he had to do a lot to help Dr. to fulfill Reddy’s dreams. He had thought about his own future role in the company and the need for a smooth succession. But who would follow? What would be the characteristics of the person who would succeed Prasad, a passionate member of the founding family of DRL? Would a CEO from outside the family be a suitable replacement?
