Case Solution

Tesla Motors, Inc. (Tesla), the electric car maker, unveiled its Model 3 in late July 2017 as its share price continued to rise. The Model 3 was massively marketed and traded and could potentially compete with mass market leaders like Toyota. The exchange also reacted positively to Tesla’s decision in 2016 to take over SolarCity, a manufacturer of solar cells, and to build the Gigafactory, the world’s largest lithium battery plant. Could Tesla justify its high multiple of its stock price simply by selling electric cars, or should Tesla become a battery company that could fundamentally transform the energy storage industry, or some other type of company?
