Sai Marine Exports Pvt. Limited. (SMEPL) had been in business for 20 years and established itself as one of India’s largest shrimp exporters with the United States and the European Union as its main sales markets. Indian companies enjoyed a competitive advantage after unprecedented market conditions due to the early mortality syndrome that affected exports from the main shrimp exporting countries of Southeast Asia in 2009. Sales of SMEPL increased significantly from 2010 to 2014. The current US and European markets were lucrative, but the president of SMEPL feared the risks of concentration in just two markets. Should SMEPL dive deeper into the US and the EU? Open markets or new international markets like Japan and China?
