Bob Whelan worked with partners to develop an idea that had sprouted even before his fellowship year, and with a creative approach and experience from his years in investment banking, he faced a significant national college funding challenge. His nonprofit organization, 13th Avenue Funding, provided students with equity as an alternative to debt to help finance college. Since he began his journey, he has faced much opposition and difficulty scaling his nonprofit organization that provided a million low-income students with a debt-free postsecondary education. Whelan continued to persevere and adapt to the changing environment.
