Case A (UV3177) describes the career of Robert O’Neill, an executive from Fairfax County, Virginia, who runs one of the highest per capita income counties in the United States. The case addresses the events that led to his being hired by Fairfax County, his experience as a county executive, and the situation at the end of the case, including the results of his efforts, the political environment, and a job opening. Students gain insight into the complexities of county government, including finance, law, politics, public relations, and strategic corporate governance, as well as O’Neill’s leadership strategy. Case B describes the decision and justification for it, as well as some other events in the district.
