The CEO of South African Nedbank Ltd. reflected on the dilemma of building the bank in a mature and competitive market within his own country and successfully expanding beyond the South African border. Nedbank’s substantial investment in Ecobank, with its pan-African presence, was a risk and required improving management skills to implement Nedbank’s strategy. To achieve this, Nedbank focused on building internal capacity through coaching and mentoring programs for its executives, as well as other initiatives that enable employees to execute the bank’s strategy. The CEO took pride in his own innovative idea for a new product and hoped to be a role model for other executives. He was equally proud that Nedbank was a values-driven company that believed in using its influence to positively impact its community and the environment. Despite positive developments, the economic situation was bleak in 2014 and a chronic shortage of skilled workers put pressure on the country and especially on Nedbank. Could Nedbank add capacity in time to address the immediate challenges it faced as it expanded into regions with higher stakes and risks?
