This case documents the rise of Meituan Dianping, the third largest company in China’s highly competitive e-commerce industry. Best known for its grocery delivery service, the company changed the lives of hundreds of millions of consumers and millions of merchants through a variety of smartphone apps. To get to this point, the company had gone through several competitive life-and-death battles, including what became known as the War of the Thousand Groupon. Well positioned to ride the fast-growing wave of Chinese e-commerce services, there was no room for complacency. Competition was fierce, as was pressure from retailers and consumers who had many options to choose from. What strategies should the company implement to maintain long-term growth in a rapidly evolving market?
