Managing for Integrity: Three Vignettes

Case Solution

Lynn Sharp Paine
Harvard Business School ()

Three situations are described. A store manager at a retail brokerage firm must decide whether to modify the store’s cash management techniques to increase interest income. An auto mechanic must decide if he will oversell the parts and repairs to meet the sales and service quotas set by management. An investigation director must decide what to do if a counterfeit product is suspected. The vignettes illustrate the influence of the organizational context on individual decision making and the importance of the management of management systems and behavior for the integrity of the organization.
