The case examines the challenges Massachusetts General Hospital faces in adopting a new infection control policy that promises to improve operational performance, patient safety and profitability. The new policy requires coordination between the different departments of the hospital, namely the emergency department, the infection control unit and the admissions services. Students are first asked to evaluate the operational, financial, and clinical impact of the new policy. They are then asked to examine different implementation approaches. Purpose: The case allows readers to examine an environment in which internal coordination between different departments provides a significant overall benefit to an organization. In this case, however, the coordination also leads to an unfair distribution of costs and benefits among the various departments, which then gives students the opportunity to explore various challenges and strategies in implementation.
