The case discusses the origins and development of the European integration process from the post-war period to 2007, with a particular focus on the Lisbon Agenda’s efforts to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness since 2000. It analyzes the different policy areas that have been addressed to European level over time and provides basic information on the architecture of European institutions. The case allows students to understand how European integration has affected competitiveness across the continent. It provides a platform to discuss the effects of cross-border cooperation in large regions on competitiveness and the lessons that the experience of European integration could draw for other regions of the world.
