In January 2005, China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) announced that it would join the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). At that time, COSCO introduced sustainability reporting in line with the UNGC, which over the next six years has grown into an information technology platform that integrates all of the company’s sustainability processes and indicators. In autumn 2011, the company management addressed the following strategic questions: To what extent should COSCO refer to national and international sustainability standards in the framework of the platform? How far should COSCO go to promote the sustainability system as a standalone product? What were the next steps in sustainability reporting and should COSCO strive to achieve even higher reporting standards in the future? Additionally, the following questions were business-related: What would be the value of achieving higher sustainability and reporting standards, and how would internal and external stakeholders react? What are the future challenges for the consistent implementation of higher standards at COSCO’s subsidiaries?
