Case Solution

These three cases represent a mediation involving three professionals from a consulting firm: two contenders (a new MBA consultant and the manager of a programming group) working on a client team, and an “interested” mediator with his own pressure and agenda that prefers to focus on business issues and wants to resolve the dispute quickly. The dispute has both technical dimensions (whether changes must be made to a computer system installed by the team) and personal dimensions (issues of respect and authority). Cases are designed as part of a mediation unit. We use the cases in various cases that allow each student to act in disputes and mediator roles. The focus of the class discussion (see teaching note) is on the competencies, the mediation process, the decisions made, and the role of the “interested mediator” often found by MBA graduates.
