John O’Callahan returned from the University of Guelph as a recent graduate and got engaged. He enthusiastically told his parents that he and his fiancee would like to take over the family dairy farm after their summer wedding. His parents, Michael and Audrey, loved the news because they had always planned to pass their family’s farm on to the next generation. At the same time, they were a little anxious because they did not wait for the decision so quickly and did not make formal succession arrangements or discuss this issue with their children. Michael and Audrey wanted to make sure that the sale price and other arrangements allowed them to retire comfortably and that their three children were included in any purchase. John was tasked with making a proposal that included a reasonable evaluation of Shamrock Dairy as a starting point for a family discussion. Although his parents and sisters seemed positive about the purchase, the assessment had to be satisfactory in the short and long term for all concerned to continue.
