The Black Duck case describes the transition from a 14-year-old software startup, languishing with outdated technology, low growth, and modest margins, to a fast-growing innovative company that had become attractive enough to be an acquisition target for large software companies. . The new new CEO, Lou Shipley, had to make some tough decisions and make a number of changes, big and small, to get Black Duck back on the growth track and prepare the company for a sale so investors could exit.
