Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics “changed the game” in terms of talent identification, analysis and player investment in Major League Baseball (MLB). Cases A and B are designed to enable and inspire learning about these topics by recounting Billy Beane’s success as General Manager of Oakland A for the past 16 seasons (1998-2013). The case makes Beane the most efficient general manager in MLB by analyzing performance and financial data during that time period, and by sharing concepts, information, and data to enable a better understanding of the barriers and drivers for the introduction of New and disruptive innovations in the US sports store.
